A jury found embattled Johnston County school board member Ronald Johnson guilty of several crimes on Friday.
Johnson is guilty of extortion, three counts of willfully failing to discharge his duties and obstructing justice.
The court imposed an active sentence on Johnson between six and 17 months. The judge said the sentence begins immediately in Wayne County.
Upon release, Johnson will receive two years and six months of probation.
Johnson had been accused of trying to blackmail congressional candidate DeVan Barbour in 2022.
Johnson was given a no-contact order with Barbour.
The court also removed his law enforcement certification.
Also, the court said Johnson will be removed from the Johnston County School Board with the finding of corruption.
