Dorothea "Dottie" A. Libbey
SCARBOROUGH - Dorothea "Dottie" A. Libbey, born on January 4, 1924, in Madison, Maine, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024, at the age of 100. She was the beloved daughter of Albion E. Briggs and Audrey M. Scott. Dorothea spent her formative years in Madison, later attending Good Will Farm in Hinckley, Maine. She graduated from Averill Hill High School in 1942.
In 1945, Dorothea earned her nursing degree from Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine. She proudly served in the Cadet Nurse Corps for the U.S. Army during World War II, completing her training just before the war ended. Shortly after, she married her high school sweetheart, Albert D. Libbey, upon his return from military service in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Dorothea's career spanned various roles in the medical field. She worked in general and private duty nursing in Maine, Indiana, and Arizona. She was also a dedicated public health nurse and worked in the Boys Training Center infirmary in South Portland, Maine. Additionally, she served as an office nurse for Dr. Briggs, Haillee, and Larnard in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Together with her husband, she played a significant role at Opportunity Farm for Boys in New Gloucester, Maine, and at Good Will Farm for Boys and Girls in Hinckley.
Dorothea and Albert enjoyed retirement in Mesa, Arizona, where she continued part-time work at Ardent Day Care Center and provided nursing home care. After Albert's passing in 1995, Dorothea continued serving others through private duty nursing in Maine and Florida.
Dorothea was predeceased by her husband, Albert, her parents, and her brother, Scott Briggs of Windham, Maine. She is survived by her three children: Dr. Peter Libbey of New Providence, Rhode Island; (Ret.) Lt. Col. David S. Libbey of Trabuco Canyon, California; and Audrey J. Sisti and her husand, Dennis, of South Portland, Maine. She leaves behind six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two nephews, and one niece.
Dorothea's legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to her family and community will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, starting at 12:30 PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
