It is the third-largest state in the U.S. and is home to incredible landscapes such as the "Antarctica of California", an underrated gem for mountain and lake views in the winter.

Well known for its iconic landmarks, like Yosemite National Park, Venice Beach, and the ever-photographed Golden Gate Bridge, California attracts many tourists eager to tick these spots off their list. In 2023 alone, California welcomed almost 15 million visitors, a staggering number that is consistently growing, but unfortunately, many of these visitors tend to miss out on the state's underrated gems.

One fine example is the "world's smallest mountain range", Sutter Buttes, which is certainly not as popular as the Sierra Nevada but offers excellent hiking and less crowded surroundings to immerse yourself in nature.

With three major peaks, this picturesque mountain range located 60 miles north of Sacramento, along with its namesake state park, is well worth a visit for outdoor enthusiasts seeking underrated gems in California.

The park is closed to the public and access is extremely limited. The best way to enjoy this area is to embark on a guided hike by the Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust , which owns the land. Hikes cost approximately $35 and help to protect and preserve the park and keep visitor numbers at a minimum.
