The New York Jets dropped their third straight game on Monday night, falling 23-20 to the rival Buffalo Bills in prime time.
The AFC East foes combined for 752 yards of offense, with the Jets' finishing with a 393-to-359 advantage. However, the game (and much of its momentum) was also marred by penalty calls, 22 of them to be exact, 11 assessed to both sides.
For his part, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers mostly gave his team a chance to win, completing 23-of-35 passes for a season-high 294 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. However, the Jets were done in by a pair of missed field goals by kicker Greg Zuerlein.
During his postgame press conference with reporters, Rodgers was visibly upset. On the second question he was asked, regarding the penalties throughout the game, the 40-year-old veteran didn't hold back.
"It seemed a little ridiculous," Rodgers said postgame. "Some of them seemed really bad, including the roughing the passer on me. That's not roughing the passer. Might as well play sarcastaball if we're going to call those things," he continued, referencing a 2012 episode of "South Park" in which the characters play an overly safe version of football.
"And I thought the one on (Jets defensive tackle Javon) Kinlaw was not roughing the passer either."
On the third quarter roughing the passer call on Bills pass rusher AJ Epenesa, ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman ripped the officials' call in real time.
"I don't like the call at all," Aikman said of the flag for an "unnecessary second act" for putting too much body weight on Rodgers.
Still, national attention won't be moving off Rodgers and the Jets anytime soon. New York is in line for yet another prime time matchup in Week 7, when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers (4-2) on "Sunday Night Football."
