CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - In an effort to educate the community's future voters, the Charleston County Public Library system has partnered with the Charleston County Board of Elections to launch a new book starring the Library's mascot, Owlbert the Owl.
"Owlbert Learns to Vote," an illustrated storybook that teaches young readers about democracy, follows the adventures of Owlbert and his friends as they discover the importance of the voting process and actively participating in the community.
Library officials say the book makes it fun and accessible for young people to learn about democracy, including a glossary of terms and questions for adults and educators that can help readers to better engage with the material.
"In every community, big or small, the voices of its members shape the world around them," Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections Executive Director Isaac Cramer said. "This book is a journey into the world of choices where children will learn that voting isn't just for grown-ups, it's for everyone."
Owlbert himself attended the book launch Wednesday, which was held at 10 a.m. at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library on Rivers Avenue.
"Books about voting are crucial for our children, as they not only educate but also inspire," Charleston County Public Library Executive Director Angela Craig said. "By understanding the power of their voices, we empower the next generation to participate actively in shaping their communities and futures."
"Owlbert Learns to Vote" is available now at several branches of the Library system and can be placed on hold here.
