Sheriff's office: Two firefighters were hurt when truck lost control, struck crash scene

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) -- Two firefighters were hurt when a truck struck a crash scene along I-94 Thursday, the sheriff's office said in an update.

As West Michigan dealt with hazardous driving conditions due to heavy snowfall Thursday morning, Comstock Fire and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office were on the scene of a rollover crash on I-94 near the 80.5 mile marker, east of Sprinkle Road. No one was hurt in that crash.

While first responders were on the scene of that crash, a 24-foot box truck lost control and hit three Comstock fire vehicles and a police cruiser before rolling over, the sheriff's office said.

Dashboard camera video released by the sheriff's office shows the semi-truck hitting the cruiser, smashing into a fire truck and rolling over. First responders can be seen running away from the fire truck in the moments following the crash.

The driver was brought to a local hospital for minor injuries.

The sheriff's office originally said no first responders were hurt, but in a Monday update it said one firefighter sustained a wrist injury in the crash, and another hurt his back. Both have sought treatment for their injuries.

The crash is under investigation with help from the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division, the sheriff's office said. The sheriff's office said the name of the box truck driver will be released once charges are authorized by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office.
