AT&T reportedly charged the customer $2 per MB of data used when they were supposed to have an unlimited data plan for four lines.
An AT&T customer in Texas claims they were hit with a $6,223.60 wireless bill for the month of November because of a pay-as-you-go data charge.
The bill, which the AT&T customer shared on Reddit this week, shows that their bill spiked by $5,956.92. The culprit? A charge for "Data Pay Per Use," which costs $2 per MB of data used. The customer used about 3GB of data that month (3,000MB), costing them a staggering $6,194, according to screenshots of the bill.
"I have been with AT&T for over a decade and I have always had unlimited plans so I knew this was a mistake," the customer wrote. "This has caused a huge amount of stress on me and my family around the holiday."
The customer said they have four wireless phone plans with AT&T including iPhones on that account, receive a First Responders' discount, and usually only rack up a bill of around $250 a month. Now, they're thinking of switching to T-Mobile, according to comments on the post.
A glitch or human error may be to blame. The customer says they've been trying to fix the issue with AT&T for days and have already spent "over an hour on the phone with customer service." They reportedly spoke with phone agents and a supervisor as well as staff at a brick-and-mortar store and was told to contact the AT&T president's office.
But the office of the president reportedly told the customer, who says they recently moved their wireless service to AT&T's FirstNet, that an AT&T store could handle the issue and closed the case. The customer then talked to that office again, which said it needed another two days to figure out a solution.
