This 271-bed acute care facility in Lufkin delivers a broad range of services, including the region's premier heart and stroke care center, a cutting-edge Women's Center with a Level II NICU, a celebrated Cancer Center and the most sophisticated imaging centers and surgical technologies available.
Monte Bostwick, Market President for East Texas, South Region, expresses his profound appreciation for the St. Luke's Health-Memorial team and their daily commitment to serving East Texas residents. St. Luke's Health-Memorial is dedicated to offering outstanding healthcare across deep East Texas, serving all life stages, from the tiniest infants in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to those benefiting from our nationally acclaimed heart and stroke programs, and every patient service in between, he says.
Situated at 1201 W. Frank Ave., SLHM Lufkin, Bostwick highlights that the hospital's team, consisting of medical experts and devoted support staff, is committed to excellence, enhancing patient outcomes and ensuring an exceptional experience at St. Luke's Health-Memorial.
St. Luke's Health-Memorial Lufkin has received an "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that establishes standards for patient care excellence.
Leapfrog grades general hospitals nationwide with an "A," "B," "C," "D," or "F," based on more than 30 national performance measures that reflect errors, accidents, injuries, infections and the systems in place to prevent harm.
The hospital continues to advance its technology, including the recent integration of Viz.ai, an AI-powered stroke detection system.
Focused on excellence, St. Luke's Health-Memorial maintains its reputation for providing the highest level of care in a professional and compassionate environment. The facility was founded in 1949 by a visionary group of local business leaders. It was acquired by Catholic Health Initiatives from Memorial Health System of East Texas on May 30, 2014. Then in 2019, CommonSpirit Health was created following a merger between Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives.
From the beginning, St. Luke's Health-Memorial has been growing. But being a nonprofit organization, these projects have always been dependent on philanthropic contributions. The most recent example is a new Graduate Medical Education (GME) Residency-Family Medicine program and Clinic launched by St. Luke's Health-Memorial. The hospital-based training program is for individuals who have completed medical school and earned an MD or DO degree. Residency is an essential dimension of the transformation of the medical student to the independent practitioner.
It can be physically, emotionally and intellectually demanding. The new East Texas residency program is funded in part by the Temple Foundation and the Mary K and Clifford Grum Foundation.
According to Crystal Y. Carter, Residency Program Coordinator, the program has now reached a full complement of residents, with three residents in Houston and another six on their way to Lufkin.
The original class, Ivonne Boeta, Karla Gonzales and Dorcas Omari, have all been promoted to third year. They will be taking on more of a leadership role this year, mentoring the newest class.
Boeta was named Chief Resident in April and Carter says she has done a great job leading, says Carter. It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome our new residents to the Family Rural Medicine Residency Program at St. Luke's Health-East Texas in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine-Houston.
"This is an exciting time for Lufkin, East Texas and for our hospitals in particular," Bostwick notes. This program offers the opportunity for urban and rural hospitals, as well, as non-hospital clinical settings, to train residents in rural areas and can help increase access to primary care in rural and underserved areas.
An Intensivist program was established in 2022. This group of physicians possess special training and bring a wealth of experience in treating critically ill patients. The Intensivist program is the first of its kind in East Texas and is proving to be a tremendous service for the hospital and the patients in our Intensive Care Unit.
With facilities in Lufkin, Livingston and San Augustine, St. Luke's Health-Memorial provides more than a quarter million patient services each year. The organization also contributes millions of dollars in charity care and local support each year. The nearly 40 Baylor St. Luke's Medical Group physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners located throughout East Texas pride themselves on delivering exceptional health care in state-of-the-art facilities that offer the latest in technology and patient comfort.
