HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- Maryland State Police have arrested a Georgia man in connection with a fatal five-vehicle crash that occurred Thursday evening on Interstate 70 in Washington County.

The suspect, identified as Ray Pittman, 62, of Milledgeville, Georgia, faces multiple charges, including two counts of vehicular manslaughter, homicide by motor vehicle, and two counts of driving while impaired. Pittman is being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center.

The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on October 3, west of Beaver Creek Road. According to police, Pittman, driving a tractor-trailer, failed to slow down in heavy traffic, causing his vehicle to strike the rear of a Ford driven by Morgan Suter, 27, of Hagerstown. Suter was pronounced dead at the scene. The collision caused a chain reaction, with the Ford striking a Buick, which then hit a Mercedes and a Honda.

The drivers of the Buick and Honda, identified as Cheri Craigo, 55, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and Connie Monte, 61, of Hagerstown, were transported to Meritus Medical Center with injuries. No further details on their conditions were immediately available.
