Man's body recovered from the Thames in Surrey after row boat capsized

A man's body has been recovered from the River Thames near Sunbury today after a rowing boat capsized last week.

The search began on Friday, October 11, when emergency services were called at around 8.50am after reports that six adults had entered the water near Wheatleys Eyot.

Five of the group were safely rescued, but a man in his 60s remained unaccounted for.

Since then, Surrey Police, along with Surrey Search and Rescue, Berkshire Search and Rescue, and Kent Search and Rescue, have been searching the area.

Earlier today on October 20, specialist teams recovered a body near Sunbury Weir.

Formal identification is still pending, but the family of the missing man has been informed and is being supported by a specialist officer.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the man's death, although police have stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Andy Jenkins, Chief Inspector for North Surrey, said: "Throughout this tragic incident we have been in close contact with the man's family to offer them support and information during this incredibly difficult time.

"Our thoughts remain with them, and we ask that their privacy is respected while they come to terms with their loss."
