BAKERSFIELD, California -- The fourth human case of bird flu has been confirmed by the California Department of Health. All of these cases have been found in the Central Valley and those who tested positive were found to have been in contact with infected animals.
In the latest case, the person was found to have been working with dairy cattle. The Department of Health also reports that they have been notified of two possible additional cases in the valley. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been sent specimens for confirmatory testing.
The good news is that the risk of becoming infected for the general public is low. The CDPH says those at the most risk are people who work with animals such as cattle and poultry.
"I think the risk to the public is small, said Frank Land with Kaiser Permanente. "The folks that are working in the industry must work with their employers to know how to best manage the situation if an animal is sick."
