Tragedy had struck a ferry dock over the weekend.
Seven people have died and several more have been injured from a ferry dock collapsing in Georgia. An aluminum ferry dock reportedly collapsed in Sapelo Island in Georgia on Saturday. The dock was reportedly crowded from an event honoring Black slave descendants, according to authorities.
The dock's collapse sent several people into the water at roughly 4:30 p.m. E.T. The chaplain of the state agency which operates the dock was reportedly among the seven people killed in the accident.
Tragically, many of those killed are elderly.
"Many of those who were on the ramp and many of the injured and dead are elderly," said McIntosh County Commissioner Rogert Lotson.
"It is a big tragedy for the county."
According to Bill and Mary Humphrey, who boarded the ferry minutes before it collapsed, witnessed the tragedy.
"It was a slow motion kind of thing. It was just going down. They were all going down in the water," Bill Humphrey said.
"I will never get that picture out of my head."
At least 20 people were reportedly standing on the dock when it collapsed on Saturday.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved.
